THE death of a man whose body was found above Witney’s Post Office will be investigated by the police watchdog.
The body was discovered at 9am yesterday on the second floor of offices in Market Square.
The man, who is thought to have been sleeping rough around the town for a few days, had been seen by police the day before.
Officers were called to HSBC in Market Square at 9.30am on Monday after the man, in his 40s, was spotted looking unwell. He was left in the care of the ambulance service.
Police spokesman Victoria Brandon said: “The unexplained death has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. This is a mandatory referral as Thames Valley Police came into contact with the deceased within 48 hours of him dying.”
Office workers believe the man was from Cornwall and had been searching for relatives in Hailey. Jason Bell, 41, of Cogges, said: “For two days running I saw him outside HSBC.
“He was quite thin and unshaven, as if he had been living rough.”
Sgt Dave Bishop said: “We are currently treating this death as unexplained and investigating the circumstances, but at this stage do not believe it to be suspicious.”
The man is due to be identified tomorrow.
