While I think we are all in agreement that the recent snowfall caused maximum disruption, it seems that many people were snowed in and many did little or nothing to help their own cause.
In Friday’s Oxford Mail letters pages, I read Adrian Taylor’s take on the situation, in which he criticised Keith Mitchell, the leader of Oxfordshire County Council.
Having since spoken to friends in mainland Europe, I was able to learn that our Euro cousins are responsible for clearing the snow outside their own homes.
Nobody gets sued as their governments take the stance that it is snowy and freezing and people should exercise greater caution so as to prevent unfortunate and unnecessary accidents.
Had this been done here, and some community spirit generated, we could have easily overcome many of the minor issues, and left the council to get on with the bigger picture.
I remember a report in which a serviceman motivated the residents of a village to clear their main through-road in an hour or so.
It’s amazing what can be achieved with some unity.
