HARROWING pictures drawn by children in Gaza have gone on display in Oxford.
The Children of Gaza Under Fire exhibition, on show at Oxford Town Hall, St Aldate’s, is made up of pictures drawn by children following the three-week Israeli bombardment of Gaza at the beginning of 2009.
The exhibition has been organised by the Network of Oxford Women for Justice and Peace, and centres on Loss of Innocence, a collection of children’s art brought back from Gaza.
Organiser Jane Alexander said: “We thought we would put together an exhibition in support of the children of Gaza, then we found this guy who had been out there and selected children’s drawings so we got in touch with him.
“It is just to inform people but also to show support for the children of Gaza so they get some feedback that they are not alone.”
The children’s drawings show houses being crushed, tanks, aircrafts and ships firing missiles into Gaza, as well as more gory scenes of blood and limbs on the streets of the troubled area.
As well as the drawings, there are photos and press cuttings from the time, film footage, and a list of the names and ages of some of the 350 children believed to have been killed during the war.
Ms Alexander said: “These children obviously have so much to say and have been through so much. Every drawing tells several stories.”
The exhibition was opened on Tuesday and will run until Sunday, January 31. It is open from 10am to 6pm Monday to Saturday, and from 10am to 4pm this Sunday and until 2pm on the last day.
