A MAN has been jailed after making his mentally disabled sister pregnant.

The 35-year-old from Didcot – who cannot be named for legal reasons – was in bed with the woman when police arrested him in January last year.

The pair share the same mother.

The woman, who consented to sex, has an IQ of just 55.

Oxford Crown Court heard the child of the pair suffered from a genetic disorder — thought to result from having parents with the same bloodline.

The man pleaded guilty in November. Today, he was sentenced to six months in jail and made to sign the Sex Offenders’ Register for seven years.

Richard Sharpe, prosecuting, said: “The woman is a vulnerable person. Social services intervened initially because they were concerned about her ability to look after the child.

“It was then the defendant wrote a letter to them saying he was the father and would like to play an active part in the child’s upbringing. A paternity test later confirmed he was the father. When police arrested him at his home in Didcot, they found him in bed with her.

“When he was asked whether he had sex with her, he said: ‘I don’t know, I might have done, I was drunk’.”

Steve Bailey, defending, said his client knew the incident could never happen again.

He said: “He was in the position where (the defendant’s) low IQ, alcohol and wish to have sex blurred the boundaries.

“He has learnt his lesson that he must not share the bed with his sister when he is drunk.

“We do not know what is behind this act and what the true motivation behind it was. What is clear, however, is that it must never happen again.”

Judge Patrick Eccles QC said the crime was serious enough to warrant a custodial sentence.

The child has now been adopted by another family.
