Sir – Councillor John Tanner appeared on television news in December, promising that his New Year’s resolution would be to tackle the litter problem on the Oxford ring road (following my letter to you published on December 10).

New Year’s resolutions are easily forgotten unless acted upon promptly, so OxClean would like to suggest to councillor Tanner that the weekend of March 5 and 6 might be a good time to clear litter on the ring road as it coincides with our Spring Clean.

The shiny new variable message signs could be used to warn drivers of litter picking in progress, and afterwards to remind people not to throw litter from cars.

As shown by the letter from George Reynolds (December 24), Cherwell District Council has put much effort into litter prevention; large green bins and clear warning notices can be seen in their lay-bys on the A34. Perhaps the other district councils could follow suit, on all main roads across the county. But even better, we could lighten the load on council tax payers by stopping throwing stuff out of our cars.
