Police have set up new regional units to cover witness protection, covert operations and technical support covering four police force areas, The units will cover the Thames Valley, Hampshire, Surrey, and Sussex.
A Thames Valley Police spokesman said officers and staff allocated to the three areas would work together to provide a better standard of service for the public and make savings for all four police forces in the long term.
He said: "This is the first legal agreement of its kind to be signed in the South East and if successful, it will pave the way for further joint working that could provide benefits for local communities and save money for the taxpayer.
"By combining in these key areas, there will be greater resilience on a regional level, the service received by the public will be more consistent, and each force will save money, either through reduced costs or a greater level of service."
Khan Juna, chairman of Thames Valley Police Authority, said: “The creation of these units shows our willingness to work together for the greater good of the South East. All public sector providers know that collaboration is driving the future of effective and efficient services.
“It’s been a challenging journey but we have established trust and confidence among our partners, and now have a tried and tested road map for future collaborative projects.”
