LARGE-SCALE roadworks on Oxford’s High Street have resumed following a longer than expected suspension due to recent weather.
Oxfordshire County Council postponed its £2.3m resurfacing scheme on November 18 after a dispute with traders and had been set to restart on Monday, January 11, but ice and snow meant it was delayed until today.
The 10-month works are expected to finish in early May rather than April 23.
Graham Jones, spokesman for the Oxford High Street Association, said: “Now the weather’s improved we hope they can crack on with the work and get it finished as soon as possible rather than it dragging onto into the busy tourist season.
“The roadworks will affect trade for businesses, but this is a relatively quiet period so it is the best time to do it.”
The council got into a row with traders in October after it initially went back on a deal to suspend the roadworks for 49 days in the run-up to Christmas, but it reversed its decision after listening to their concerns.
