A CHARITY which fights to get fair trials for people being held in foreign jails is helping a Faringdon man.

Father-of-two Alan Rae, pictured, is facing up to 15 years in jail in Peru after he was arrested on suspicion of trying to smuggle up to 18kg of cocaine out of Lima Airport.

Last night his daughter, Aimee, 16, said Fair Trials International had taken up his case.

She said: “We approached them to see if they could help my dad and I know they have been in contact with him in prison.

“One of the biggest things we are worried about is Dad not getting a fair trial. He doesn’t speak Spanish, and we don’t know if he will get an interpreter.

“We know he is innocent and want to do everything we can to help him at this trial.

“His caseworker is often on the phone to me and we are really glad Fair Trial International is helping him.”

Rae, 39, who is originally from Kidlington, faces the charges alongside travelling partner Nathan Brandon, 21, from Abingdon.

The pair were arrested in April and are currently being held in the Sarita Colonia men’s prison in Callao.

It is not known whether Brandon is being helped by the charity, which needs the prisoner’s signed permission before it can start acting on their behalf.

Fair Trials International is an independent organisation based in London which “defends the rights of those facing charges in a country other than their own”.

It provides legal assistance and caseworkers for individual cases, and campaigns for more transparent legal systems around the world.

Spokesman Ryan Flynn said: “We can confirm Alan Rae is a client of ours.”
