CRICKETING heroes past and present will turn out to honour a coach who spent 60 years nurturing talent in Oxfordshire, including the current England Test captain.
A memorial service is being held at Radley College on Saturday for the school’s former cricket coach Bert Robinson, who has died aged 92.
Mr Robinson joined the school as its cricket professional in 1948 and remained a part-time coach during his 80s even after he had officially retired.
Pupils who benefited from his coaching include current England captain Andrew Strauss and Ted Dexter, also once England captain and former president of cricket’s MCC.
Radley’s current cricket coach Andrew Wagner, said: “Bert was a friendly face for the boys for many years and I enjoyed the time I spent working with him.
“Even after he retired from the school he came back to help in the nets and was an umpire well into his late 80s.
“He coached some pretty famous names in the world of cricket.”
The memorial service starts at midday.
Mr Robinson was 77 when he began coaching Strauss in 1994.
Warden Richard Morgan and ex-warden Dennis Silk are expected to address the service.
Former pupils expected to attend include Glamorgan captain Jamie Dalrymple, ex-Middlesex batsman Ben Hutton and former Hampshire player Charlie van der Gucht.
