A Didcot soldier killed fighting in Afghanistan has been named today.
Capt Daniel Read, 31, of 11 Explosive Ordnance Disposal Regiment, Royal Logistic Corps, part of the Counter-IED Task Force, was killed by a bomb in northern Helmand province on Monday.
Capt Read was described as an experienced bomb disposal officer who defused 32 roadside bombs while serving in Afghanistan.
He survived a bomb blast in October last year and returned to theatre in December.
His widow Lorraine Read this morning paid tribute to her husband.
She said: “Dan was so brave, he was my hero and best friend, he was a loving husband, son, brother, uncle and friend.
“He will never be forgotten and always in my heart. I’m so proud and privileged to have been your wife.”
Commanding officer Lt Col Gareth Bex said: “Dan Read was filled with a zest for life. He epitomized the values of selfless commitment, loyalty and deep-seated courage.”
Capt Read was born in Kent and was a graduate of the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst.
