Sir – Mr Payne writes (Letters, January 7) that it is “tradition” to leave Christmas lights on until Twelfth Night. That does not prevent it being an irresponsible waste of our resources. His “traditions” do not necessarily benefit our planet. Extravagant electric lighting at Christmas is anyway a fairly recently invented tradition.
