Sir – Ian Smith is of course correct when he states (Letters, December 31) that it’s necessary to act quickly to preserve swimming pool provision in Oxford.
It is unfortunate that years of Labour neglect have left Temple Cowley pool in a less than ideal state of repair, and I accept that bringing it up to standard will be no mean feat; but it would still seem at best rash to conclude from this that the pool, easily accessible for thousands of Oxford families, has no future.
The previous Liberal Democrat administration on the city council planned to combine an ice rink and a swimming pool in the Cowley area and a family-friendly pool in Blackbird Leys; regrettably, the current Labour administration has ditched this plan. Nonetheless, I have every hope that they can be persuaded to change their minds: Oxford has a great tradition of swimming excellence, and deserves the best and most accessible swimming provision possible.
