Sir – The current breakdown of postal services in rural areas is partly the fault of householders. Many of them seem to consider it normal for deliveries to be made through the door, even if it is at the end of a long drive.

This is expecting too much even at the best of times, since it is in effect subsidized by those who do not take the delivery van away from the road. When snow or ice lie on the drive it makes service impossible.

Perhaps we should have a law requiring people to have a letter box not more than, say, five metres from the road.
