ONE match – and up it goes!
This was the bonfire which was lit to mark the end of the Girl Guides’ 13th World Conference in Oxford in 1950.
A total of 10,000 Guides packed into the city’s South Park to enjoy the finale of the celebrations held to mark the movement’s 40th anniversary.
The other picture was taken earlier in the day when Princess Margaret arrived in the arena.
As we recalled (Memory Lane, June 29), Guides brought Scrolls of Friendship by various means from all over the country.
They presented them to the Princess, who then handed them to 27 foreign delegates to take home to their countries overseas.
The scrolls expressed the hope that many exchange visits between Guides of different nations would take place in future years.
Another major event was a water pageant held on the River Cherwell, in the University Parks.
