We expect the Ashmolean Museum will be a busy place when it opens its doors to an eager public on Saturday. The evidence of our coverage over recent weeks, including this week’s supplement celebrating the refurbishment of this Oxford institution, is that the museum has been transformed into a major 21st-century attraction.
For those who have known and loved it for many years, the Ashmolean has been a place to visit regularly with the family, with schoolchildren or with serious academic purpose in mind. Slightly cramped, much of the museum’s collections has been hidden from view for lack of space.
Now, however, the museum has been opened up significantly with new purpose-built galleries allowing the collections to breathe and for many items to go on permanent display for the first time.
Not surprisingly, the museum has attracted significant local and national publicity over the last few days and weeks. This is, after all, the biggest musuem project the UK has seen in a decade.
So, congratulations to director Dr Christopher Brown and his team at the Ashmolean. We, like many of our readers, are looking forward to visiting this fantastic ‘new’ attraction. We suggest Dr Brown and his team brace themselves for the queues!
