GIRLS at an Oxford youth group are hoping to kick bullying into touch with new self-defence lessons.
The Barton Girls and Young Women Group, which meets twice a week at the Youth Centre, in Underhill Circus, have been learning Tae Kwon Do, a Korean martial art focused on kicking techniques, which also teaches mental and ethical discipline.
The sessions, on the first Tuesday of every month, have been organised by youth leader Mel Jewell, pictured front, who grew up on the estate.
She said: “The girls obviously don’t hang around in gangs, but I think having the power to block someone’s punch and know they can protect themselves should they need to is a very positive thing.”
Instructor Christopher Hughes, back, said the classes also fitted in with the club’s message about healthy living and exercise.
He added: “So far we have had some really good comments from the girls.”
The group is looking to start more regular sessions in time for next year’s Barton Bash festival when it hopes to put on a display.
Lauren Harvey, 14, from Brampton Road, said:“I think they’re a good thing for girls our age to learn because they can help you if you’re in trouble and they’re fun too.”
