IT’S bad enough that learning basic maths in schools is going down the drain, but now Alex Wilkinson and Tom Watson prove that the lack of ability to read a complete letter and comment on the actual meaning indicates English Language is also a dying art.
Both mistakenly conclude that my comments, on the lack of taught mental arithmetic skills, means I believe we should work out mathematical calculations manually rather than by calculator, when I clearly observe that you need to understand the basics before moving on to calculators, ensuring the skill to guarantee you use that tool correctly.
At least Adrian Taylor (Letters, October 26) read my entire letter and understood the logic.
Well done that man. I’m not surprised that he is a man skilled in wood – so was my father. Skilled minds and hands think alike.
