OXFORD'S MP’s have recently been taking an interest in global warming (Oxford Mail, October 20 & 26), but, sadly, they do not seem to be equally committed.
The week before last, Gordon Brown’s man in Oxford, Andrew Smith MP, voted against the 10:10 motion – which called for 10 per cent emissions cuts by 2010 – put forward by the Liberal Democrat Simon Hughes. And this was despite having spoken at a demo in favour of the motion the weekend before!
Perhaps Oxford East’s New Labour MP has a poor memory: he also forgot about all the post office petitions he collected a few years ago when he voted in Parliament to scrap Oxford’s post offices.
Liberal Democrat Dr Evan Harris, who represents Oxford West and Abingdon, voted in favour of the 10:10 motion. Readers who care about the environment may want to remember this when they get to vote in 2010.
