I AM writing to ask the people of Oxford to support this year’s Poppy Appeal. People have given generously in the past and it is as important today that they continue to donate.
At this time of year and especially on Remembrance Sunday, we remember the courage and sacrifices made by our Armed Forces so that future generations are able to live in peace and freedom.
We are particularly grateful for the work of the Royal British Legion which cares for the needs of our armed forces and their dependants.
Over the past few years I have been grateful too for all the work which the Royal British Legion does in supporting the repatriations of servicemen from Iraq and Afghanistan.
This has enabled members of the public to pay their respects alongside the Legion and has been much appreciated by the families.
The Poppy Appeal is the main source of funds which directly supports the Legion’s welfare and benevolent work. The calls upon the Legion’s services are growing each year and we in Oxford should continue to meet them.
Councillor Mary Clarkson, Lord Mayor of Oxford
