EVERY life lost in Afghanistan is a tragedy, yet there is an added cruelty in the death of Staff Sgt Olaf Schmid on the final day of his tour.
He was just hours away from returning to Didcot and seeing his wife and stepson.
Having dealt with 64 bombs in his five months in Helmand province, Staff Sgt Schmid’s bravery cannot be questioned and we respectfully salute him and send our deepest condolences to his family and colleagues.
