WORKERS at a pet rescue centre have been left wondering whether superstition is stopping people from having black cats in their homes.
Blue Cross animal adoption centres across the UK have 249 homeless black cats but only 39 ginger cats.
The charity’s base in Burford has five cats up for adoption – all black. And staff are trying to dispell some feline myths.
Nikki Smith, centre manager at Burford, said: “We don’t know why some people don’t want to adopt a black cat. Perhaps they are superstitious and think they’re unlucky.” “We’re urging people who are thinking of adopting a cat to take a closer look at the black cats we are caring for.
“They really are just as affectionate and loving as the brighter coloured pets.”
The Shilton Road-based centre takes in an average of 35 cats a month, but said the higher demand was always for ginger cats.
