A PLAQUE was unveiled by Witney MP David Cameron to officially open the town’s new shopping complex.
The Conservative leader visited Marriotts Walk today to look at the £50m development, in Welch Way.
He said: “I think we should be excited, as in so many places it is out-of-town shopping centres opening. But here there is a brand new shopping centre and cinema opening in the heart of Witney,” he said.
Mr Cameron also praised the free parking available in the town, adding: “One of the strengths is the fact that people can drive in, shop and go home.”
He also admired a specially-commissioned mosaic in the shopping centre, which was shown to him by artist Heather McCulloch and stopped to chat to shoppers, above.
Don Portman, from Appleton, who spoke to the MP, said: “It was wonderful, it made my day.”
Janet Combellack, 62, of Chipping Norton, had her picture taken with Mr Cameron.
She said: “He looks a lot younger than I thought he would. He is rather dishy. There will be no more shopping in Oxford for us!”
Yesterday, the stores in Marriotts Walk – which include Marks & Spencer and Debenhams – opened their doors to shoppers.
