THESE mums and youngsters had plenty to shout about.
The ugly character in the middle of the front row had just been named the best-dressed guy in town.
The fact that he had a screwed-up face, saggy arms, wobbly legs and no proper feet didn’t matter.
The judges in Witney’s Guy Fawkes contest declared him the winner.
And there was no doubt about it, because he is seen proudly sporting a No 1 label on his shoulder.
If we are not mistaken, a pot of gunpowder is resting on his leg, ready to blow everyone up.
Children at the Newland playgroup, helped by parents and staff, had spent weeks collecting material and creating their guy.
Then, with other entrants, they brought their guy along to Church Green for the judging.
The Newland playgroup children were delighted when their efforts paid off.
As you can see above, they posed with their creation for the Oxford Mail photographer.
It appears they weren’t the only winners – according to the Oxford Mail at the time, two girls from Henry Box School, Rosamund King and Clare Little, also won a top award for their guy. The picture was taken in 1979 as the town prepared for its Bonfire Night celebrations.
Sadly, the outlook for the Newland guy – as well as all the others that took part in the competition – was grim.
They were all destined for a bonfire on November 3 at a fireworks party organised by the Burwell Farm Community Association and the Witney Lions Club.
Guy Fawkes Night will be celebrated at many events in the county this week.
