Sir – In response to Paul Weindling’s letter (October 22), I also have been concerned about the historic aspects of the old Nuffield Maternity Home.
Prior to its handover to the University, I wrote in 2003 suggesting the preservation of the unveiling plaque, and in particular the Eric Gill ‘relief’’ of a mother and child which was on the facade above the front door to the home. My letter was forwarded to the University.
The ‘relief’ is particularly memorable and familiar to our family as my father was the first Nuffield Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (1937-1967).
