The flag of the ancient kingdom of Wessex will fly from the top of St George’s Tower at Oxford Castle to mark King Alfred’s Day on Monday.
The celebration marks the 1,010th anniversary of his death and commemorates the history, culture and folklore of the county Wessex, which spans modern-day Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Wiltshire, Dorset, Devon, Berkshire and Somerset.
