TOWN councillors have opposed plans to build a supermarket in Carterton.
Sainsbury’s applied for planning permission for a 25,000sq m store at the West Oxfordshire Business and Retail Park, in Upavon Way.
But the town council has objected to the plans because it believes a supermarket outside the town centre would pull trade away.
It is now urging Sainsbury’s to consider building in the town centre, which, it said, would provide a catalyst for regeneration.
It believes that the retail park proposal would scupper redevelopment in the town centre, planned for the past 10 years.
Sainsbury’s development executive Ben Littman said: “We are disappointed Carterton Town Council has objected to the plans.
“Our proposals, if approved, would bring the certainty of investment, jobs and a choice of food shopping to Carterton within the short term and attract shoppers back to the town, as well as providing a boost to the Business and Retail Park.”
West Oxfordshire District Council, the planning authority, is due to make a final decision on the proposal in the coming weeks.
