A SURGEON who helped transform services for stroke patients in Oxford is in the running for a major award to recognise leadership in the NHS.
Ashok Handa, a consultant vascular surgeon at Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals, has been shortlisted in the Award for Inspiration category, at the NHS Leadership Awards, which attracted more than 700 entries.
Mr Handa, right, who came to Oxford as a lecturer in vascular and transplant surgery in 1998, is credited with helping to change the culture of the health trust, improving services by putting “patients at the centre.”
He also has a key role in education as clinical director for performance improvement and clinical reader at Oxford University.
Andrew Murphy, a former director of performance improvement who nominated Mr Handa, said: “He is a fantastic role model who always generates energy and enthusiasm to engage colleagues. He has transformed the local stroke service.”
Mr Handa said: “We need to continue to strive for better care for our patients.”
Winners will be announced next month.
