AN OXFORD estate has been named by police as a key target during a two-month crackdown on antisocial behaviour.

Blackbird Leys has been highlighted as an area which will benefit from Thames Valley Police’s Operation Confidence, which is launched today across the region to crack down on crime and disorder.

Each police area will run its own operations to target drunken and disorderly behaviour, violence and criminal damage, but extra resources will be ploughed into priority areas – such as the estate.

Insp Andy Storey, pictured, who is in charge of policing Blackbird Leys, said: “Christmas is a popular time when people are out and about and weary of antisocial behaviour.

“We will bid for more resources, and, if successful, officers will come to Oxford and be used throughout the day or evening.”

Test purchasing operations at off-licenses and nightclubs, and action against mini-motorcycles are also planned.

Officers receive about 50 reports of antisocial behaviour on the estate every week.

Assistant Chief Constable Steve Rowell said: “We have succeeded in reducing antisocial behaviour in many neighbourhoods through a combination of increased police patrols and community engagement.

“But it remains a problem in too many places, and too many people’s lives are blighted by the inconsiderate, selfish or threatening actions of others.”

To report incidents of antisocial behaviour, call Thames Valley Police on 08458 505505 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
