FORMER servicemen and women whose club is threatened with closure have been given a two month stay of execution to repay a £52,800 tax bill.
The Marston Royal British Legion Club, in Oxford, which has more than 500 members, faced closure as it struggled to pay the bill.
But managers received a call from HM Revenue and Customs on Thursday informing them they would not be closing it down.
However, club chairman Derrick Lancaster was told the club would be liquidated in two months, if it failed to provide a guarantee that it had the cash to pay off the bill.
However, it has not been told when the balance would need to be paid.
The club has so far amassed an amazing £10,000 in members’ donations in just over seven days. Yet it still needs to raise £42,827.
Managers are frustrated they haven’t been given longer to raise cash, but they hope to summon the Dunkirk spirit as they attempt to raise the necessary funds.
Mr Lancaster, 65, said: “We’re still on the meat hook.
“After two months the taxman wants guarantees they will get all the money. However, they have not given us a timescale of when the want the money repaid.
“If we haven’t got anything set up they will put us into liquidation.
“The situation is still critical. We really need people to rally round and see what money we can get, and how we can raise more.”
The club, in Hadow Road, has been a hub for ex-servicemen and nearby residents for 51 years.
Members fear the closure could bring an end to the Marston branch of the RBL, which last year raised £8,434 for the Poppy Appeal.
Six people also face losing their jobs.
Fellow committee member Faye Cullen is planning fundraising events, such as a book sale, pamper evening and Halloween party.
The club has also set up a bank account for its rescue fund, though the unpaid bill is constantly accruing interest – rising by £49 in the past month.
Mrs Cullen said: “Members have been brilliant with their support and we have got to stay positive. There are lots of fundraising ideas, but very few people to organise them.
