IT DIDN’T take long to identify the Oxford Ixion Motorcycle Club scramble team from 1959.
Club secretary Ken O’Brien set readers a puzzle, asking for venue, riders and machines (Memory Lane, August 17).
Gordon Shepherd, of Barracks Lane, Oxford, and Cindy Guy, of London Road, Wheatley, between them, managed to supply all the names.
They are, from left, Gordon Shepherd (Matchless), George Bond (team manager), Frank Underwood (BSA Goldstar), Joe Johnson (Goldstar), Doug Wheeler (Cotton), Eric Stroud (DOT) and Pat Lamper (Goldstar).
The event they were competing in was the 1959 South versus North team scramble, which was held at Dave Curtis's farm at Stoke Lyne, near Bicester.
Cindy writes: “I worked for John Avery, the 1952 British Scrambles Champion, at his garage from 1959 to 1963.
“I have very fond memories of those years.”
Gordon tells me that George Bond was also the manager of Hepworth, the Oxford tailors.
