I RESPOND to the story (Mail, September 30, Buggy Protests) about the controlled parking zone which would force drivers to park vehicles on pavements. I quite agree with the residents of Iffley Fields.
But the same thing is happening all over Oxford and it’s about time something positive is done to stop this sort of illegal behaviour.
For instance, it is illegal to park cars on pavements. It’s a law passed by the Government and it is the responsibility of the police to take action against offenders. Even if you are only parked on the kerbstones you are parked on the pavement.
Read the Highway Code.
I would also like to stress a point on cyclists riding on pavements, no lights, crossing red lights, all of these are illegal and the responsibility of the police. This is punishable with a £30 fixed penalty. If a cyclist hits and injures someone while cycling on the pavement, they could face a large fine and possibly spend time in jail.
Enforcement could be the job of PCSOs who could cover all streets on both cases. Even Control Plus could cover pavement parking.
The council should not put parking areas or cycle tracks on pavements, it is a danger to pedestrians, especially at bus stops and an idiotic practice.
