First let me state that I am not a customer of Mr Pratley’s hairdressing business in Hertford Street, but I know of the premises and lived at one time in the East Oxford area.
How anyone can claim that the streets are subjected to commuter parking beggars belief.
It’s not anywhere near a bus stop into town and the walk into Cowley Road doesn’t seem geographically to be an option.
Come by bus? Step into the real world council members.
Check the location, not just look at a ‘A to Z of Oxford’.
If a business has lasted in one spot for 41 years then it must provide a need, and no doubt has contributed to the city’s coffers in business rates for that time.
Parking has always been a problem in an area where the houses were built when car ownership was minimal and therefore no facility was considered necessary for off road parking.
Again referring to geographical location the cars parked in the area will belong to residents already and introducing a CPZ will not ease their problems, merely give an opportunity for some more yellow paint to be put down with the extra possibility of a new form of stealth tax for those making short visits to local businesses who are already struggling anyway with the recession. Are there any councillors living locally? If so get off your backsides and start defending the people who live and work in your area.
