NOT a single motorist has been fined for exceeding the city’s new 20mph speed limit, one month after it came into force, the Oxford Mail can reveal.
Two days ago, our speed check in Morrell Avenue discovered that 119 out of 163 vehicles – 73 per cent – were breaking the limit on that stretch of road.
When 20mph limits were introduced in Portsmouth in March 2008, Hampshire Police handed out 17 fines in the first month.
Thames Valley Police spokesman David Paull said: “There has been no enforcement activity either carried out, or indeed required as yet.
“Enforcement activity will always be preceded by engagement with our partners in the local authorities and community based solutions such as community speedwatch.”
The force said it had received one complaint of breaches of the new limit through its neighbourhood team in Littlemore and requests for speed monitoring to be carried out in the Wolvercote, Sunnymead and Summertown areas so far.
