It was interesting to read of the city council’s ‘plans’, in your front page headline, in last Monday’s Oxford Mail, for a new site for gypsies and travellers on land south of Grenoble Road.
In fact, I am happy to reassure your readers, there are no such plans.
There is currently consultation on where potential new sites might be located. Although I agree more sites are needed in Oxfordshire, the shortage of land (and its very high cost) within the city is such that we believe suitable locations are more likely to be found outside the city’s boundary.
We are making representations on this to the Government, and are very happy to work with the other Oxfordshire districts to find a solution, meaning that we have the right amount of provision in Oxfordshire, in a suitable location, without excessive cost to the public purse.
A misleading impression might have been given by a summary of our consultation response, which had not been updated to reflect the response’s actual content, and I am sorry if this led anyone to draw the wrong conclusion.
Ed Turner, Deputy Leader, Oxford City Council
