HUNDREDS of older people showed what they’ve got at a special event celebrating the county’s over-50s.
Activities were held in leisure centres across Oxford for Older People’s Day.
There were also singing events and talent shows.
Blackbird Leys Leisure Centre offered free gym sessions for over-50s, free badminton and free table tennis, and there was free tea and coffee in the centre’s cafe.
Fitness instructor Michael Fisher said: “As well as keeping active, being a member of a community is an important part of keeping fit and healthy, which is why we opened the gym and classes for the over-50s and offered free tea and coffee so people could just come for a chat and meet with friends.”
At Ferry Sports Centre, activities included free mobility sessions, aimed at older people and focusing on stability and balance.
For the ladies, a water workout class was free, while badminton and swimming were on offer for all older visitors.
The theme for this year’s Older People’s Day, which is now in its third year, was ‘Full of Life’.
Oxford City Council leader Bob Price said: “It is important that the over-50s keep fit and active.
“I am 56 years old and go to the gym at least twice a week and cycle to work and into town for council duties.
“This keeps me active and feeling more energised to keep up with the daily challenge of meeting work commitments and council responsibilities.”
About 70 older singers from west Oxfordshire showed off their musical talent at the Wellbeing and Resource Centre, in Audlett Drive, Abingdon.
The event was supported by Age Concern, Practical Participation and Oxfordshire County Council, and led by Rachel Smith and Sally Mears.
Ms Smith said: “Singing is an incredibly positive activity.
“In terms of older people, it can stimulate reminiscence.
“Those who lose the ability to speak through stroke or dementia find they can sing words.
“Singing together can help build and develop community.”
On Thursday, a talent show showcasing the abilities of the over-65s was also held at Green Gates Nursing Home, North Oxford — with the theme being Bupa Wants Talent.
