The body of a 21-year-old man discovered on the M40 motorway has been identified by police.
Alastair Callum Mackay, of Lighthorne Heath, South Warwickshire, was found on the inside lane of the northbound carriageway between junction 11 at Banbury and junction 12 for Gaydon at about 2.15am on Saturday.
Motorists faced delays as the road was closed for more than 12 hours while forensic teams combed the area for clues.
A post mortem examination carried out this weekend showed he had suffered extensive injuries, but police are still waiting for the results of other tests.
Officers are continuing to appeal to motorists travelling on the road, north or south, between 1.45am and 2.15am on Saturday to contact them.
Det Chf Insp Adrian McGee, from Warwickshire police, said: “We still need to establish how he came to be on the motorway at that time and also exactly what happened to him.
“The M40 motorway is a major route and potential witnesses could now be anywhere in the country. I am asking anyone who was travelling on that stretch of the motorway at that time to think about whether they saw anything unusual.”
Anyone with information should call Warwickshire Police on 01926 415772 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
