A ROGUE trader described as the “lowest of the low” has been jailed for conning a 91-year-old woman.
Tom Mobey, 57, was found guilty of three counts of fraud during a trial at Oxford Crown Court earlier this year.
The court heard Mobey targeted Inez Taylor at her home in Benson, in April last year, and charged her £2,350 for roofing work that was either shoddy or not even carried out. Judge Mary Jane Mowat today jailed Mobey for 18 months.
She said: “It is the lowest of the low, conning elderly people. Taking advantage of them is about as bad as it gets in deception offences.”
Mobey, of West Croft, in Berinsfield, still denies conning the pensioner, Judge Mowat told the court.
Mrs Taylor’s daughter Penny, 58, said: “My mum is so happy. It may not sound a lot, but he’ll be out of the way for 18 months and after that people know what he looks like so it may stop it happening.”
Mobey was also ordered to pay £500 in compensation to his victim.
The court heard Mobey has 16 previous convictions for dishonesty, including theft.
