I’M SURE that Mick Heavey (Mail, September 22), had the over-65s’ welfare at heart when he wrote regarding recycling.
However it came over as rather insulting to us oldies, to suppose it is our section of the population who cannot cope with the recycling programme for Oxford city.
I suggest he turns towards the multi-occupancy homes where students and other young people congregate.
Here in Cowley we are overwhelmed with these places, as every corner of every road there are up to five green wheelie bins, five blue boxes and as many black bags. Nothing seems to be placed in the correct receptacles. Perhaps they are too busy studying to realise the rules are meant for them as well!
We have a very good calendar issued to every household by the council telling (even illustrating) which bins to put out which week, so it beggars belief that people of any age or nationality cannot understand it.
Most elderly dementia people have carers and those I have met are happy to recycle. They are very busy. If they can do it, anyone can.
MARY STIFF, Corunna Crescent, Cowley, Oxford PS On a recent holiday to Norfolk I was delighted to note that the toilets were plentiful and spotlessly clean in every town or village we visited. Guess who was responsible for the gleaming loos and fresh flowers? OAPS of course.
