A FATHER who has beaten cancer three times will lead the way in a charity run tomorrow.
Alim Erginoglu, from Wolvercote, was diagnosed with cancer three times between 2001 and 2004, but is expecting to be given the official all-clear in December – five years after his last treatment and the month his second child is due.
The 35-year-old was first diagnosed with seminoma, a type of testicular cancer which most commonly affects men between the ages of 30 and 50, in 2001.
Although he underwent surgery, a year later a lump was found on his lymph nodes and he was forced to go back for radiotherapy.
Mr Erginoglu said: “My last experience was in 2004.
“I went back for a check-up and was told the testicular cancer had returned once again.”
But the businessman refused to let his illness get the better of him.
He took some time off work to go travelling with his wife, Rachel, and wrote a book about his experience of cancer.
He said: “Despite all the difficult times, I am alive, happy and always positive.”
To reflect his positive attitude, Mr Erginoglu will run tomorrow’s 10km route, roughly 6.5 miles, around the grounds of Blenheim Palace, in Woodstock, with the message ‘Life is beautiful and there is always hope’ emblazoned on the back of his T-shirt. His wife Rachel and three-year-old daughter Keira will watch.
Cancer Research UK’s Run 10k is a series of 43 events this autumn. About 1,500 people are expected to take part at Blenheim tomorrow, raising more than £160,000.
