A GROUP of folk musicians are bringing the traditional sounds of Russia to Oxford tomorrow night.
Karavai, a balalaika quartet from Perm, Oxford’s twin city in the Ural mountains, are rounding off a visit to Britain this week with a concert at the Newman Rooms, in Rose Place, off St Aldate’s.
The balalaika is a traditional Russian instrument with a triangular body and three strings.
The musicians visited the county music service’s headquarters, at Bayard’s Hill School, in Barton, on Tuesday, to give a 30-minute concert and hold a balalaika workshop for the children.
Deputy headteacher Sarah Shoesmith said: “It was a very good experience for pupils, who had the chance to discover new music and learn all about the region of Russia where the group comes from.”
Folk music, film themes, jazz and arrangements of works by Russian classical composers will feature in tomorrow's concert, which starts at 7.30pm.
Tickets cost £6 for adults and £4 for children under 12.
They can be booked in advance by calling 01865 252264 or at the Town Hall, in St Aldate’s. Tickets will also be on sale at the door.
