Sir – Your feature on Network Rail’s proposals to enlarge Oxford station (September 10) made little mention of the difficulties in getting to and from the station, even today.
From whatever direction, walking and cycling are uncomfortable experiences in streets filled with foul air. North Oxford has no bus connection with the station. Abingdon buses, after leaving the station, dwell in St Aldate’s. Taxis and cars get stuck in the Hythe Bridge Street jams.
The county council’s spokesman has said that this is a rare opportunity to provide the facility that Oxford needs and deserves.
Unless accompanied by a comprehensive plan to lessen the challenges of access, the station will remain beyond reach for many and Network Rail will get a lower return on its investment than it hopes for.
