Many will remember the days when Bulgarian, Hungarian and Romanian wines were to be found in many wine shops — and now they are making a comeback as the Eastern bloc has moved towards privatisation and exports have increased. Here is a selection of modern wines that will tantalise the taste buds whilst not breaking the bank.

The Spy Who Came in from the Cold case costs £71 and includes three bottles each of the following four wines.

Matra Hill Pinot Grigio 2008, Hungary: Crisp with much more fruit than most Italian offerings, this is a top-selling wine which really has that ‘drink me’ factor. Hints of apple and pear and a hint of zest make it a winner, with or without food.

Terra Dacia Pinot Noir 2007, Romania: Romania has always made good value-for-money Pinot Noirs and this one is no exception. Cherries and raspberries abound in this delightful medium-bodied wine.

Nagyrede Cabernet/Kekfrankos 2005, Hungary: This blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and the indigenous Kekfrankos grape variety works well with the richer local variety adding depth and spice to the wine. Great with lighter meats in particular.

Domaine Boyar Cabernet Sauvignon 2008, Bulgaria: Domaine Boyar has emerged as Bulgaria’s leading wine producer and with up-to-date modern equipment their Australian designed winery is turning out excellent wines that are really tasty and full of fruit. This Cabernet has classic blackcurrant notes and is a good match with casseroles and stews.
