PHYSICIST Brian Southgate won through to the semi-final of TV quiz show Mastermind with two explosive topics — football manager Sir Alex Ferguson and the atomic bomb.
Mr Southgate, 55, works for the Harwell-based Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
He is also a lifelong Manchester United fan and first saw the team play at Fulham’s Craven Cottage ground in 1957 when he was four.
Mr Southgate, who lives with his partner Pat in Letcombe Bassett, near Wantage, got on the programme after auditions at The Old Bank Hotel in Oxford in March and won through to the semi-finals.
He said: “I was delighted to get on the programme and making it through to the semi-final was beyond my wildest expectations.”
Mr Southgate’s second specialist subject was The Manhattan Project, the Second World War development of the atom bomb.
The semi-final was filmed last week but no broadcast date has yet been released.
