A MOTORSHOW and driving challenge especially for women at Dalton Barracks raked in £10,000 for The Fire Fighters Charity.
The airfield near Abingdon played host to an array of vehicles on Sunday, including dumper trucks, JCBs, stretch limos, sports cars and fire engines.
The driving challenge attracted about 200 women to take on a series of driving manoeuvres. Philippa Stride, from Bicester, raised £600 – the highest individual total from the day.
Organiser Romaine Flint Wood, from Oxfordshire Fire and Rescue, said: “It’s the first time this type of event has been done in Oxfordshire but it went down a storm and hopefully will be held again next year.
“We had one woman who had heard about it and flew in on a small aeroplane, did the challenge, then flew out again. We also had a woman who was cycling past with a group, saw what was going on and decided to have a go. She even had to borrow a pair of shoes from someone because she couldn’t drive in her cycling shoes.
“The money goes to The Fire Fighters Charity, which relies totally on donations and gives firefighters a bit of a cushion if they’re injured of get ill through work.”
