A FLEET of new ‘green’ buses will take to the city’s streets today.
Oxford Brookes University and the Oxford Bus Company have teamed up to invest more than £2m in 11 blue double decker buses which are designed to be kinder to the environment.
According to the university, carbon emissions from the new vehicles have been reduced by 28 per cent, hydrocarbons by 62 per cent and nitrogen oxides by 60 per cent compared to buses previously run on the route by Stagecoach, before it lost the contract with the university. The new buses also have free Internet connection.
Oxford Brookes student union president Abeiku Sarbah, pictured centre, said: “The new Brookes buses bring great benefits to our members, they’re an environmentally friendly and cost effective way of getting between campuses and the city centre while at Brookes.”
Philip Kirk, managing director of the Oxford Bus Company added: “We are delighted that two organisations at the heart of the community, the university and the bus company, have come together to make such a significant contribution to the city’s environment.”
