WE WOULD like to thank everyone who celebrated ‘Streets for People’ (Mail, September 21) and ‘Car Free Day’ in Oxford.
We can all reduce our carbon footprint by using our cars less and switching to walking, cycling and public transport.
Cars are a wonderfully convenient ways of moving around and the Mini is vital to Oxford’s economy.
But cars are also expensive, potentially dangerous and an unhealthy way of getting from A to B. In Mobility Week we should all re-think the way we travel.
Oxford is already ahead of the curve with our park and rides, the popularity of cycling and the new 20mph limits.
But we need to do more, which is why the city council is pressing the county for more bus lanes, a network of cycle routes and improvements for pedestrians.
Nearly all of us can manage to be in town without our car most of the time. Car Free Day is a timely reminder that, for the environment, our health and road safety, we should use cars less.
Cllr JOHN TANNER, Board Member for Cleaner, Greener Oxford
