JOHN Lynch retired in 1986 after running the village general stores for 30 years – and villagers gave him a pair of slippers and a dressing gown to make sure he relaxed after his regular 12-hour days. As newsagent, grocer and butcher, he ran a typical village shop.

In 1961, a new village school opened, bringing a touch of luxury to children and teachers. One of the benefits was that, unlike the old school, the sun beamed through the windows. The picture shows the junior class enjoying their new surroundings.

Pupils in Drake House won the primary school house points cup in 1964 and the house captain, Evelyn Brown, is seen receiving the award from the mayor of Wallingford, Mrs M H Simmonds.
