Police are searching for a woman in her seventies after a doorstep con in Oxford.
The woman, wearing a pink cardigan, called at the home of an 85-year year old woman in East Oxford at about 1pm yesterday, claiming to be carrying out a collection for an unknown charity.
The woman asked to come in and was left alone while the elderly resident left the room to make a cup of tea. After the woman left, the elderly woman discovered most of her jewellery had been stolen.
Det Con Rhian Evans said: “The woman is described as being in her seventies, white, about 5ft 4in tall and medium build. She was wearing a pink cardigan.
“We would like to hear from anyone who saw this woman in the area at the time, or from anyone else she may have called on.
“I would also like to warn people to be vigilant to callers claiming to be from charities or organisations. Always ask for identification and never let anyone in your home until you’ve checked out their credentials.
“Ideally you should never let anyone into your home unless you have made a prior appointment and if you are still uncertain about a caller, or feel uncomfortable in any way, then do not hesitate to contact police via the Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505.
“If there is a crime occurring, then call 999.”
Anyone with information should contact Det Con Evans via the Thames Valley Police Enquiry Centre on 0845 8 505 505, or speak to the Crimestoppers charity anonymously on 0800 555 111.
