Confusion reigns over the Environment Agency’s latest attempt to draw flood maps for the county.
More than a thousand homes in Oxfordshire are no longer at risk of flooding, according to the new boundaries.
The agency – to the relief of many homeowners – has shifted homes in Abingdon, Oxford and Wallingford, out of ‘at risk’ zones.
In Oxford, it seems, there has been little change.
Many of the homes now regarded as being out of trouble didn’t flood in 2007 – and were really never at risk.
Meanwhile, households around Botley Road and Jericho are still in the firing line when the floodwaters come.
But the maps are not a solution; they are not going to stop people worrying. And will they convince insurance companies to reduce policy premiums?
When it comes down to it, more still needs to be done to protect families if – inevitably – the flood waters rise again.
