THE historic Godstow bridge has been badly damaged in a hit and run accident.
A large section of the bridge at Wolvercote is in the river but it is still structurally sound, police said today.
Spokesman Victoria Brandon said police were called to the bridge near the Trout Inn at 2.45am today.
A Nissan Maxima had crashed into the bridge and been abandoned by the driver.
A police dog and officers searched the area but were unable to find the motorist or any passengers.
The bridge is a grade II listed building.
Police are appealing for anyone with information about the crash to call 08458 505505.
